Sketches and Stills: Concept Art

Writer's picture: Terry MarksTerry Marks

This section contains a series of concept images from throughout the various stages of this project. Many are specifically captioned to assist in the understanding of where they fall into the overall project.

Hilda in the bathroom, paranoid, tense, tap is on but she does not pay it any mind; she is looking at a spider's web with a moth caught in it in the corner.

Hilda lying in bed, trying to sleep but seeming unable to. Clock is ticking agonisingly slowly (sound effect of clock, slowed down); the fan is on but it hardly does anything.

Hilda at the end, seen through a doorway that hides the other end of the table where her dead husband sits. The Colour palette is now primarily red, symbolising both the carnage that took place and Hilda's happiness in it.

Wedding portrait to be used as part of the background, storytelling through the environment. Faces are not really visible, characters recognisable from silhouette; it's more about their roles than them as specific people.

Hilda opening the door to speak to the exterminators outside. No lights on inside the house, the light source is coming from outside through the ajar door. She does not let them in.

Hilda, disheveled, at the end of her rope, flipping through the Yellowpages in a room half-destroyed by moths, phone cord around her wrist

Exterminator scene as seen from the outside. Red for indoors, yellow for outdoors, it is near sundown.

Hilda watching the TV, seeing the advert.

Hilda standing in the aftermath of one of her husband's outbursts. Broken crockery on the floor, a spilling wine bottle, cuts and bruises on her visible body parts, her blood mixing with the wine. Monochrome colour scheme to ramp up the intensity.

Setting design: American suburbia, rows of identical houses with identical orderly lawns.

Hilda at the end of the short, sitting across from her very dead husband, cheerily drinking tea and carrying on a conversation as if he were still alive. Put-together again with her hair done up and heavy makeup, but now wearing a red party dress instead of the blue/white one seen in the beginning.

Husband at the end of the short, pinned through the heart with an icepick, echoing pinned insects from earlier.

Hilda seen from above, through a hole in the ceiling hiding swarms of moths, she is dwarfed by them in the shot
