Inspirations: 60s Adverts and Illustrations

Minimalism, strong bold geometric shapes, and primary colours, similar to the style I have used for my storyboards

Series of vaguely old-timey misogynistic ads. In-story Hilda would get much of her ideas from these. The women in them reflect the styles and beauty ideals of the era, the ideal woman is a young beautiful housewife. Stylistically I have taken inspiration from the fashion and hairstyles she wears at various points in the story. The style is detailed and realistic, though highly idealised – would not work particularly well for my purposes as I need to draw many images in sequence for either an animation or a comic, a more stylised and simplified approach works better for this.

Red/yellow/blue/black is a common colour scheme due to the limitations of newspaper printing at the time. Also, the typical colours used in comics of the era (see, early Marvel and DC). Works well for my purposes as all of these colours are potentially evocative, can be mined for emotional impact, and create a cohesive colour scheme together.

Expressions on the models’ faces are unrealistically happy to the point they do not look entirely genuine, mildly unhinged. Stepford Smile. I have made use of similar expressions at various points in the narrative where the contrast between what is happening and Hilda’s apparent joy is meant to be disturbing.

Same as above but looks particularly unhinged. Inspiration for Hilda at the end of the story.

Stylised look more directly comparable to what I want my final work to look like.
